The Other Side Reviews Country Stroll

Ari Joshua – Country Stroll (2024)
by Nicole Mendes January 22, 2024

Known for his infectious, inspiring and enthusiastic jazz tones, Ari Joshua’s melodies capture your senses with ease, but it is the lyricism and ease of collaboration that truly pushes his natural energy. When we left Ari Joshua, or at least the last review we posted, it was a gander at his funk meets jazz single ‘Soul Mine’; and now, just less than a year later, Joshua astounds us once again with another addition to his moving repertoire. Come with us as we delve into ‘Country Stroll’.

With a strong penchant for collaborations, US-based South African-born Joshua effortlessly strums along with notable artists to create magical music. In ‘Soul Mine’, he joined Delvin Lamarr (keyboard), Grant Schroff (drums), Tor Dietrichson (percussion) and Skerik (saxophone). Creating musical fusion in ‘Country Stroll’, Ari Joshua connects with legendary guitarists John Medeski and Billy Marin to “showcase Joshua’s compositional prowess…perfectly fitting into any season or setting.” Recorded with Chris Bittner at Applehead Recording, mastering by Ed Brooks at Resonant Mastering, and mixing by Ari Raskin at Deepwater Studios, ‘Country Stroll’ is a menagerie of masterful music professionals tucked into three minutes.

“I’m incredibly excited to share ‘Country Stroll’ with the world. This song is a celebration of the beauty of the natural world and the simple joys of life. I’m honoured to have collaborated with John Medeski and Billy Martin on this project. Their musicianship and creativity are truly inspiring.” -Ari Joshua on ‘Country Stroll’

Taking a quick listen to Ari Joshua’s discography it is clear that he is anything but pedestrian. Mixing various genres which might clash but somehow come together under his fingers, I hear elements of indie-rock matched with funk, folk and Britpop lined between jangle pop and strong jazz undertones (not all in one song but at least two or three). Following ‘Flask’, ‘Country Stroll’ is a delicate shove back to the 1960s introducing a slip of power-pop between the jazz-inspired guitars and drums. Then again, while a reminiscent fizz of soft music – a perfect theme song for a country stroll – there is a contemporary jazz flow bringing retro mystique to modern-day audiences.

In addition to the single, Ari Joshua released an official music video for ‘Country Stroll’. You can view the video below or on his YouTube channel.
